Roof & Fillcoat Coating

Roof coating is a protective coating which extends the durability of new roofs and are suitable for repairing roof damage. Year after year, your roof takes a beating Especially in Canada these Roofcoatings are in high demand.  Wind, rain, snow, ice and sun can take years off your home’s protective shell and can lead to premature aging and expensive repairs. In fact, while some homeowners may not like to hear it, it can cost well over $4500 to replace the roofing on a typical 1000 sq. ft. house. There also comes a time when you simply want to change the colour of the roof, even though it is still in good condition. Roof maintenance with a coating can be significantly cheaper than replacing the entire roof. For as little as one fifth of the cost, you can avoid the expensive replacement of any sloping and aging shingle or sheet metal roof.

Different types of roof coatings

  1. Asphalt emulsions. These coatings consist of asphalt particles dispersed in water; they utilize clay as the emulsifying component. These coatings are available in black, brown, or as a reflective coating when titanium dioxide or aluminum pigments are added.
  2. Acrylic roof coatings. These coatings contain various types of acrylic polymer, and are typically formulated to help extend the coating’s life and improve durability. Acrylic coatings are available in a number of colors but are most commonly used as white reflective coatings.
  3. Solvent based asphalt coatings (cutback coating). These are often also referred to as cutback coatings because the asphalt (solid at room temperature) is “cut back” with solvent which liquefies the coating. This allows the coating to be easier applied.
  4. Solvent based silicone coatings. Silicone coatings are typically produced by adding a catalyst and solvents to a silicone base. Because the silicone is a natural material, these coatings are bio-degradable. Silicone coatings are available in many colors, including reflective white and translucent.

Roof coating for shingles

Coating products and paints advertised as suitable for application to asphalt shingle roof systems currently are available and marketed primarily to do-it-yourself homeowners. You can buy most brands at your local Home Depot.

Brand RoofKeeper is for example an innovative elastomeric roof coating especially designed for asphalt shingles. It can also be applied on sheet-metal roofing. The microporous, acrylic emulsion is applied directly to the roofing material, just like a regular paint. Specially formulated for severe Canadian climates and strong winds, this coating is ultra-adherent and lasts up to 10 years. Other brands are Black Knight, Blue skin, Coolflex and Storm king. Roof coating is also ideal for changing or harmonizing the colour of the roof, after repairs for example.

Keep in mind: Roof Coating should never be used on a leaky roof. Always repair leak before applying product.

What does roof shingles paint cost?

A protective roof paint for shingles costs approximately under a dollar per square foot. On average, replacing shingles costs over 5 dollars per square foot. Plus, you can do it yourself in a very short time. How? Watch the video below for application and safety instructions.

For the best results, take note of the following tips:

  • Apply down to 45 degrees.
  • Fix any broken or missing shingles. Use a paintable acrylic caulk for large cracks or paintable roof repair tape.
  • Do not apply to moist or wet roofs or if rain is forecasted within 24 hours of application.
  • Please note that roof Coating will not stop leaks from poorly or improperly installed shingles and flashings or from improperly pitched roofs. These are structural defects that no roof coating can solve.
  • Use a 3/8″ nap roller and good quality painter’s brush for hard to reach areas.
  • Can be applied with paint sprayer and or garden type pump sprayer.

Waterproofing your roof

One of the many crucial properties of roof paint is waterproofing. Roofs are naturally subject to all weather conditions; they must endure everything from heavy rain to hot sunshine. Waterproof roof paint is often also UV resistant and therefore beneficial. Aquashield waterproof roof paint for example is ideal for fixing roof damage; for it contains fibers which fill gaps and cracks on the roof making the surface even and waterproof.  (For that you can use Fillcoat coating) For extreme durability there are also coatings based on plastic. This coating has a life expectancy of 15 years.

Metal and aluminum roof coating (heat reflecting)

Rust occurs when unprotected metal is exposed to moisture. Once rust attacks, it can quickly spread and may cause serious structural damage on your roof. Cladding paints or roof coating is often used to protect metal roofs. Besides protecting, you can use metal roof coating to both protect your roof from the elements and significantly reduce energy costs.

Cooling Roof Coating at Home Depot

One known brand (available at Home Depot) in Canada for this is Sta-Kool Metal-X from Gardner. Atough, white elastomeric roof coating that is formulated for exceptional bonding strength to metal roof surfaces. This coating also contains rust inhibitors, which provide long-term protection to metal surfaces. It expands and contracts with the roof’s movement to resist cracking and peeling. The bright white finish keeps metal roofs cooler by an average of 50° compared to uncoated metal, thus minimizing heat stress associated when metal roofs expand under the hot sun. By this it also helps reduce energy cooling demand.

The future of roof coating: Tesla’s new solar roof tilesSolar roof coating

Recently Tesla’s Elon Musk presented a new type of tiles; Solar roof tiles. One of the many innovative features of these tiles are the almost unnoticeable solar panels. Tesla aims to make solar look good with this innovation.

Firstly, the key to this look is a special coating that changes the appearance of the tiles; Solar roof coating. Secondly, the secret tot the tiles appearance is that the coating basically becomes more or less see-through when looking at it directly. But when you are walking through the street and look up, it looks like your normal slate shingle or even terra cotta shingle.

The coating camouflages the integrated solar cells, but when viewed from a 90 degree viewing angle they become more and more apparent.

This dramatic effect was accomplished by working together with 3M on the special coating. It resulted in a tile that permits the passage of sunlight from overhead, but still looks like a regular roof to anyone at ground level.

If you are interested in the solar glass coated roof tiles you might have to wait a little longer. Unfortunately, Tesla hasn’t announced anything about pricing yet. They did emphasize that the prices will differ from home to home because of installation factors. In summer 2017 the first one or two stiles will be made available for purchase.
